Yet another expensive nightclub-meets-lounge located in a refurbished industrial space on Richmond Street, the G Spot is so named because it is "about pleasure and enjoyment." Maybe that's where they got the name, but the molded interior of the bar, designed by Freddy Tikki, is so womb-like that any former baby should feel right at home. Plaster snake sculptures, somewhat erotic paintings, fibreoptic-artsy lights and a wide array of sleek and modern fixtures contribute to the sensual feel.
Twisting and turning throughout the place, there are several rooms and three levels to explore. The lower level is merely bathrooms and a coat check area. The Main floor is divided into several areas, including a large dance floor equipped with laser lights and a banging sound system. The cover booth is a strange metallic sphere and the bar is long and polished. Above the dance floor is a balcony area, perfect for people-watching. The rest of the second floor is made up of bars and lounge seating.
At the other end of a refurbished vault on the first floor is the cocktail lounge Elements, which aims to cater to the after-work and over-25 cocktail crowd. Stained glass windows, live jazz and finger foods are just some of the treats to be seen, heard and had here.
The rest of the time, the place is a dance club, notable for its size and design, but otherwise unremarkable. While there is no dress code on Friday nights, most other nights a full dress code is in effect. The crowd is usually at its most diverse and plentiful on Saturdays; long lineups and a packed dance floor are common, pushing the capacity of 1,000 to the limits. |
